Herbs and spices can take your cooking from mundane to marvellous. But did you know some of the common herbs you can easily grow are sources of antioxidants to improve your health?

We know that antioxidants are an essential component in our diets, helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases, cancer, degenerative diseases and inflammation.

By growing your own organic herbs you can have a healthy and fresh source. Herbs offer the greatest benefits in their unprocessed state, so freshly grown ones in your garden or in pots will supply the most benefit to your health.

Stock up on the more exotic spices and you may even double the nutritional value of your meals, according to Dr. Mercola.

Another benefit of growing and using your own herbs is the fact that they are low in calories. They add a lot of flavor without adding calories to your cooking. As well they can provide anti-inflammatory and natural antioxidant power to your food. In fact, some herbs and spices, on a weight for weight basis, outrank the antioxidant power of the top healthy fruits and vegetables.

Oregano – highest antioxidant herb

Oregano is the herb with the highest level of antioxidant power, even outdoing the highly antioxidant blueberry! One tablespoon of fresh oregano has as much antioxidant power as an apple.

Marjoram, sage and thyme also rank highly as powerhouses of antioxidants. Grow these  herbs in your kitchen garden, use them often, and do your health a favour.

I’m not claiming these antioxidant herbs and spices will cure disease. The use of them will, however, contribute to your health and well-being when used properly. Use them in cooking, in teas, or even purchase and use quality essential oils. Do your own research, grow the herbs that you will use, and do some experimenting with teas and new recipes that incorporate them.
